If you are breathing right now (and I hope you are), at some time or another, you have been hurt.
It would seem that emotional turmoil is as much human nature as breathing and walking.
It is universal. It is something we cannot avoid. It would seem that no matter how much we distance ourselves from it, the unkind word or mean look is inevitably hurled our way.
You try to be the bigger person. You do everything right. You crossed your t’s and dotted your i’s, yet someone looked past your good intentions and stuck a dagger into your unsuspecting heart.
Are you not good enough?
Is there something wrong with you?
What did you do to cause this?
Know that you are not alone. Know that just because it was said doesn’t make it true. Know that unkind words are just that – words.
A newspaper editor fired Walt Disney because, “He lacked imagination and had no good ideas.”
“We don’t like their sound, and guitar music is on the way out.” Decca Recording said of the Beatles in 1962.
Teachers told Thomas Edison that he was “too stupid to learn anything”.
Creating an entertainment empire, changing the world’s view of music, or inventing the light bulb was no easy task.
Fortunately, you don’t have to change the world. You just have to change YOU.
In relation to what others say, we decide what is true (within reason). We decide who does and who does not have a say in our lives.
Will others continue to spray their negativity? Yes. Will it cease to hurt just because we ignore them? No.
Whoever made up the saying “sticks and stones” was an idiot. Words hurt. They cut deeper than any knife.
We need not dwell on those things. We must let those negative people stay where they are as we pass them by on the way to our dreams.
Will this be easy? Absolutely not. Can it be done? YES!
We have to change our perception, our filter if you will, of what we take in from others.
We have no say in how people will treat us, but we can decide how to process it.
Only then can we expect to overcome the hurt.
The difficult times in life aren’t dead ends. They are just speed bumps.
Don’t let one person distract you from a world of opportunity.
Keep going! There is something amazing just ahead!
What is it that you are allowing to keep you down?
