With New Years fast approaching, I have been in search of an overarching principle that I can apply to 2014. I want to be able to look back and say, “That was the year everything changed.”
During my devotions last week I was in the book of Matthew. I came to chapter 22. In verses 37-40 Jesus says, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”
He essentially summed up the entire Bible in one breath.
Jesus says, “Love Him. Love them.” End of story. Thanks for coming. That’s all folks.
In today’s culture, this seems to be too simple. There has to be more to it than that. We think we need a 10 step process or program to follow in order to understand God’s purpose for our lives.
We too often seek out quick fixes and ways to make things easier that in the end only overcomplicate things.
Jesus decides to save us the trouble here. He spells it out in plain English. Love Him. Love them.
Loving Him means putting His plan for our lives above our own. It means taking the truths we see in Scripture and actually applying them. No if, and, or buts. God knows best, and we give Him power to work through us by giving up ours to Him.
Loving them is an extension of loving Him. God loves them, all of them. He does not look past the wrongs they do. We know that God hates sin, but he loves everyone. So should we.
In 2014 I plan to live by that simple mantra. I want to love Him more, and do more to show my love to them.
I hope you are thinking towards 2014. If so, what are some areas you are planning to focus on next year?
